Today's market

Asian markets were mostly lower overnight but tame by recent standards. The Bank of Japan Summary of Opinions was released showing officials have discussed additional tightening but that would be “conducted carefully” with some suggestion that rates would need to move to ~1% by 2H of 2025. European indices were also under pressure playing some catchup with US markets. US futures had traded on either side of unchanged overnight but jumped ~1% after initial jobless claims moderated to 233k from 249k last week while continuing claims ticked up to 1.875ml. This week we’ve been in a vacuum of economic data to help calm concerns after last week’s disappointments, so today’s claims data has received outsized attention. Since the open equities have extended to the upside with the S&P 500 up nearly >2% back around the highs of the last few day's again. Treasury yields were modestly lower overnight but reversed to the upside and accelerated after another weak Treasury auction. Like yesterday’s 10yr auction the 30yr tailed pricing at ~4.31% above the 4.28% when issued. The 2yr yield is up 8bps to 4.05%, the 10yr is up 6bbps to 4.01%. The VIX has moderated but is still holding firmly in the mid-20’s .
